The present painting was first attributed to De Hooch by Hofstede de Groot.

This was subsequently supported by Friedlander and Valentiner. Sutton listed it in his 1980 catalogue raisonné as a tentative attribution. He has subsequently ascribed the work to Hendrik van der Burch  brother-in-law of De Hooch who worked together with him in Delft in the early 1650s and painted similar tavern scenes (see Sutton, Hendrick van der Burch, in Burlington Magazine, May 1980, 315-326).
