SEVRES VASE "L'ETUDE"

The biscuit figure of seated woman reading a book held in her lap surmounts a vase in the form of an antique oil lamp. The lamp is painted in "vert bronze" a ground color simulating patinated copper and decorated with gilding.

Marks, in gold under foot: jj (for 1786) within crossed Ls surmounted by a crown (for Sèvres hard paste) LF (for the gilder André-Joseph Foinet, known as La France, 1758-
1839)

Model by Simon-Louis Boizot (1743-1809)

French, 1786

Height: 11 inches (28 cm.)
Width: 11-5/8 inches (29.5 cm.)

This vase is a rare example of "l'Etude" an exceptional Neo-classical model created for Sèvres in 1780 by the sculptor Simon-Louis Boizot. The factory archives reveal that this example in the rare "vert bronze" ground was one of six in different colors fired at Sèvres on December 26, 1786, which were gilded by La France and his colleague Vandé.

Condition: There is a small chip on the inside of the spout of the lamp.
On the underside of the body of the lamp several fine cracks radiate upward from the point of its attachment to the foot.
