This charming portrayal of one of his fellow academicians dates to Eichler's period at the Vienna Academy from 1860 to 1864. While the present work still shows a strong Biedermeier influence, Eichler was to become an acclaimed exponent of Austrian Naturalism.
He worked in Rome and Munich before returning to Vienna. Eichler exhibited in Vienna, Prague, Breslau, and Berlin. In his estate sale of 1902 were many portrait sketches, landscapes and genre pictures.
