Eugène Lami worked in the ateliers of both Horace Vernet and Gros at the École des Beaux-Arts.  He began his career as a lithographer of military subjects and made his debut at the Salon in 1824.  He continued to exhibit until close to his death in 1880.

He was among the founders of La Société des Aquarellistes français in 1874.  He spent time in England and a series of watercolors representing the visit of Queen Victoria to Louis Philippe is preserved at Windsor Castle.
